Group Rua: our Maths language.

We are learning about the language of mathematics and what equal means and how we can show this.

We now know the equal sign = means the same as.  Both sides have to be the same or equal.

We have been using the words half and the fraction sign to show our equal groups.

Maths is so connected!!  It was nice to spend time exploring all the ways we can make these connections.

Special Interest : Introducing factorials

As part of finding the numbers 1- 20 using only four 4's .  We were introduced to Factorials.

Factorials use the exclamation mark (!)
ie  4!

a " factorial of n items gives you the number of ways you can arrange the given items."

So 4! means = 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 24

For example: If there are two coins - you can arrange them in two different ways - like wise if you have 3 coins - there are 6 ways you can arrange them.
If you have four coins you can arrange then in ___ ways?

Group Tahi and Wha: bar models

These groups have made their own bar models using google slides.
They used the shape tools to create and measure their bar models. Today the whole was 24. We know our fractions all depend on our whole.

Very proud team!!

Special interest: more cookies ....

Here is our last group who divided the recipe into thirds and created their smartie biscuit.

Special interest: making four 4's

Here are all our solutions.
Ka pai to Robert who went home and found his own solutions!!

Special interest Ono - Tuesday

Here we are making smartie cookies and banana clusters. We worked as a group to decide on who was bringing which ingredients. We then had to divide our recipe into thirds or halves as some groups forgot their ingredients.

We then designed and made containers to hold our cookies.
Using nothing but an A4 piece of paper.

Group Wha: Sharing our shared lunch

Today we shared strategies from our shared lunch.
Our tough question was we had 28 blueberries and needed to share them with four people. How many would each person get?

Pippa could share out blocks to Work this out and Poppy put out thinking into a word story. Great team Work group!!
