Logan wants to show what 8,736 looks like.
It is an ev en number because of the ones. The six ones can be put into two equal groups.
Welcome to the Maths blog for 2017. Our teacher is Mrs Madden. We are looking forward to working together and learning new mathematical concepts and accelerate our learning. Check our blog regularly to see what we have been up to. We would love to read your comments.

Game of the Week: Got it
Got It is an adding or subtraction game for two players. You can play against a friend. It is a version of a well known game called Nim.
Start with the Got It target 23 .
Of start at 23 and subtract to get to zero.
The first player chooses a whole number from 1 to 4 .
Players take turns to add or subtract a whole number from 1 to 4 to the running total.
The player who hits the target of 23 or 0 wins the game.
Play the game several times.
Can you find a winning strategy?
Can you always win?
Does your strategy depend on whether or not you go first?

Group Tahi: house fractions
Here we are working out what houses we are in.
As you can see we have 5 people altogether - that is our whole
We have 4 people in Takahe and 1 person in Hoiho
We can also say 4/5 are Takahe and 1/5 is Hoiho
Which is the biggest fraction??
Yes it's 4/5ths :-)

Group Ono- multiplication and division connections
Today I learnt about equal sharing or division.
I got confused and now I remember how to use it. I remember the problem about the 21 fejoias and collecting them in groups of 3. I knew that there were 7 groups altogether. 21 divided into groups of 3 and that is 7.
21 divided by 3 = 7
or
3 x 7 = 21
'Groups of' (times) and division are connected together!!!

Group Toru: multiplication
Here group Toru is using the book 'one is a snail' to find how many legs it would take to make 28.
These are the girls favourite combinations- they found over 5 different ways.
I am proud to see them using multiplication instead of repeated addition and finding a variety of ways. Keep it up girls!

- This class helps me learn new ways to answer problems. “ Grace
- “This class is challenging me” Grace S and Jerry
- “ I learn more complicated Maths and things I wouldn’t do in my classroom ie square roots.” Joe
- “It’s fun, I get to spend time just learning Math” Jerry
- “ I get to do harder Maths and way more challenging. It is different, we have more problems. Like optical illusions” Lucas
- It is challenging and interesting, if it’s challenging it is getting me smarter (Quinn).
- “Its helped me to struggle, it was fun as well as doing Maths. Normally Maths isn't that fun.” Dayna
- “This Maths is a bit hard and makes me struggle and I like the Maths we do. I especially learnt fractions. Last year I didn’t know any fractions - now I know divide by three is the same as putting it into thirds. Lucas
- “I enjoy baking and using the measurement tools. I enjoyed doing 4 fours and countdown timer. It was a challenge. We get to share our learning with our class.” Khan
- “ I learnt more strategies, from other students and Mrs Madden. It was fun at the same time. “ Max M
- “I like doing the 4 fours because it is challenging, and the fraction snakes, it puts our learning into action. I like cooking and using my fractions.” Jonathon
- “I learnt how to make all numbers, this learning is different (learning power to, square roots). Learning our own ways to learn has helped me.” Olivia
- “ I get to learn more and get better and learn deeply. Having conversations at home has extended my learning.” Robert
- “I like the cooking, I will do it again at home. I kept doing it at home (the folding of paper to make ⅙, I’m still practicing.” Arad
- “ This helps improve my Maths - I just love it.” Andreus
How Can Mrs Madden Improve:
- Nothing, keep it the same - Grace
- More cooking
- Having more Maths and Art combined - like optical illusions “Lucas and Quinn
- Get more time to do it in the afternoons. Ben
- “I don’t think you can - it’s awesome!” Olivia
- Keep doing it!

- Sara “It is ok to make mistakes and that helps us grow.” “Using the chromebooks to make a bar model using Google slides was fun.”
- Rebecca “It helped with my fractions, I now know ⅚ and how to put it onto a numberline.””working with a small group where I feel comfortable to talk and discuss my Maths ideas.”
- Jennuli “ In class I’m not much of a talker about Maths, this class helps me to understand my Maths. I am now brave enough to put my hand up in class.”
- Ellie “ In class I wouldn’t put my hand up, I was nervous. The class has helped me a lot and to show my mum and dad I’m not dumb at maths. I wish I didn’t have to leave.” “I was a doubter and now I’m not”
- Jack “ When I first walked in here I didn’t like Maths. I thought I would be bored, but you made it fun for us. You play games with us and it makes me so happy.” “I was embarrassed and wouldn’t put my hand up and now I do”
- “You make us challenge ourselves, and I love Number of the Day.” by Jack and Jenuli.
- “ We can have others help us in our small groups, we have lots of equipment to put pictures in our heads,” Olivia
- “I can talk more in a smaller group, I can ask questions.” Pasindu
- “I get to use equipment and play games with numbers and writing numbers in Chinese.” Neil
- “We can take our time and it is nicer to learn here it is not rushed and there is no yelling.” Olivia
- “ Learning is fun here, I understand Maths in my class better now, we get to build stuff, I like using the blog and computer on Thursdays.” Ashton
- “Using the empty number line, it's helping learn my doubles and I get time to draw out my solutions.
- “I like using the tens frames, I get to chose what works for me,” “I feel more comfortable to share the strategy the teacher is talking about.” Jaymee
- “ I like the Maths class because we help each other learn, I learn best from that.
- “Have time to write out my ideas and strategies here - especially on the whiteboard table.” Danille
- “ I like the blog and writing comments, it helps me remember the work I’ve done and be proud of myself.” Chantelle
- “We have time to practice our skills and not be rushed” Chantelle
- “I have learnt fractions, pluses, times and division. I like putting times tables into 'groups of' ie 5 groups of 10 is 50 as well as 5 X 10 = 50” Erin
- We work hard here, you can’t escape learning. Mrs Madden acts crazy to teach us new Maths”Franca
- “I learnt from others, I now know my fractions I didn’t know before. We are making connections, I now know how they relate to multiplication and division.” Evie
- “ I like using the blocks to make the numbers and put a picture in my head. I can see the place value this way.” Pippa
