Making 10 - Group wha

Here we are making 10 with a pack of playing cards.
We are learning our number bonds to 10.

We put the cards into a 3 x 3 array and put the cards on top of each other.

Two more Self reflections

“ It helped me learn with my hundreds, tens and ones.  I now know how to count from the highest number. I have learnt my big doubles  and the patterns.”

“ I am learning my doubles by putting them into pictures for me.” “I can see different maths patterns now.”

Welcome New students - an activity for Monday (Queen’s birthday)

Here is a game for the long weekend:

Use two dice to get a total of 100 (of course you can make it 20, 30 or 50 to start with).

Players take turns to roll the dice and use any operation
( + - x Divide).

Keep a record of your choices and combinations

ie 3 and 5         3 x 5                  15
    6 and 3         6 x 3                  33 .....

Have FUN!!

How we made 130 out of the numbers given.

 Thanks Grace!!
 Thanks Karol!
 Well done Ben and Sebastian!
Thanks Joe!

Day 2: Special Interest Mathematic Classes

Playing the game:

Here we are given a total (130) and some numbers - we need to use these numbers in any possible way to get the total. Remembering we can only use a number once.

Have a go and then take a look at what our group did...

Our Special Interest Group Began this week - we had an hour and a half of challenging our brains!

The problem we worked on today is one of the world’s unsolved problems in mathematics, which is, in itself very cool.

It involves a sequence of numbers called a Hailstone sequence. The sequence is called this because the numbers go up and down again, like this: 20 – 10 – 5 – 16 – 8 – 4 – 2 – 1

Hailstones do this – they start in a cloud as drops of rainwater, then they are pushed higher in the atmosphere by wind where they freeze, sometimes several times, before eventually falling back to Earth.

The number sequences are called hailstone sequences because they go up and down like hailstones.

In mathematics people make conjectures - it is an idea that you think might be true but you do not know for sure. Conjectures are very important in mathematics, and making conjectures is something you can be doing as a math student.

Try working with some hailstone strings of numbers that have different starting numbers and make conjectures about what you find out. A hailstone strong follows these rules: If a number is even, divide it by 2 If a number is odd, multiply it by 3 and add 1.

Here we are working together.

Reflection time continued.....

"Here I get to roll the dice and add up.  I like to see how the numbers are made up.  I like writing in the different languages, I like Maori and Samoan they are nearly the same.”

May 23, 2017 9:18:47 AM.jpg

“ I like this problem because I learnt my division - it means sharing into equal groups." “I know my timestables and my division had the exact same numbers.  ie 7 x 3 = 21 and 21 3 = 7. "

May 22, 2017 2:24:48 PM.jpg

“I have learnt division and multiplication now.  I like the questions all the time and the  fun things we do to help us figure out problems ie Karate Maths. Here I remember the symbols of maths in a fun way. I normally find it hard to remember things.”

May 22, 2017 2:58:50 PM.jpg

“I have learnt my family of facts using reversibility. “ “ I now know lots of strategies that I can use to answer problems. “

May 23, 2017 11:09:56 AM.jpg

“ I enjoyed this problem because I put my work into a bar model.  This makes it easier by seeing how to put the whole into thirds.”  I enjoyed the challenging problems and working with a small group.”

This game helped me with my timestables and basic facts and I love the game.  It just helped me learn so much in a fun way. I like how I’ve learnt to group numbers together to make an answer.  I like the model (arrays)  it is a way to find answers easily.”

May 23, 2017 2:19:38 PM.jpg

“ I liked learning all the different ways to make 30.” I enjoy the lessons as they give me time to think and grasp the concept before moving on.”

May 23, 2017 9:53:51 AM.jpg

“These classes have helped me know my timestables and other stuff.” “I liked this problem because I was making 20 and then I counted in 10s. I know that 2 + 2 = 4 and 20 + 20 is 40.

May 23, 2017 12:03:38 PM.jpg

“ I enjoy trying to work out the answers and breaking numbers in half like 313 + 442

Is 300 + 400 = 700, 10 + 40 = 50,  3 + 2 = 5 so it is 755. “ “ I like making patterns and finding patterns of numbers.”

May 23, 2017 2:46:01 PM.jpg

“I’ve been taught how Maths works with all the signs, like adding and subtracting. I like using the blocks, they  help me a lot.  I enjoy writing on the board and saying how many dots we can see, it’s helped my learning too. When I hear a number, I can now see it and count it in my head.”

May 29, 2017 9:36:06 AM.jpg

“ I enjoyed adding two digit numbers, it is an easy and fun way.  I like learning new numbers and finding out the answers.”

May 24, 2017 10:31:51 AM.jpg

“ I enjoyed making 10 using the cups and sticks because it is fun and I can learn Chinese numbers too.  I also have learnt how to write the English and Maori numbers.”

May 24, 2017 9:16:56 AM.jpg

“ I am learning my doubles by putting them into pictures for me.” “I can see different maths patterns now.”

May 24, 2017 10:06:08 AM.jpg

“I learnt to count on now.” “I learnt to make 2 one hundreds, 2 tens and 3 ones, this makes 223.” “I like this page because of my writing of the numbers and the colours.” “I can now add big numbers.”

May 24, 2017 11:31:07 AM.jpg

“ I like learning 4 x 3 = 12, I like doing Regan’s problem.  I was jumping over the chair. It was fun. I learnt times, that means groups of. “

May 24, 2017 11:51:45 AM.jpg

“ I enjoyed making 10 and then seeing the same pattern to make 20. Ie  8 + 2 = 10 so then 8 + 12 is 20, I just added another 10.”
I enjoy working in a group by talking with them about my maths  it helps me learn.”

May 24, 2017 2:04:20 PM.jpg

“I chose this piece as I worked the hardest on it.  I learnt quarters, and that the smaller the denominator the bigger the piece.”

May 29, 2017 9:45:53 AM.jpg

“I learnt about halves, quarters and eighths.  I liked using the models to show the whole broken into equal pieces. “ I like the lightsaber activity it was fun and I learnt putting numbers into equal groups. “
“Here I was using the whole and showing what ¾ looked like.”

May 29, 2017 10:04:13 AM.jpg

“I enjoyed doing this problem because it was about ladybirds and flowers.  I learnt about groups of which is our timestables tables.” “I like coming to Maths because it is fun to work out what problems equal.”
