Group Wha: Sharing our shared lunch

Today we shared strategies from our shared lunch.
Our tough question was we had 28 blueberries and needed to share them with four people. How many would each person get?

Pippa could share out blocks to Work this out and Poppy put out thinking into a word story. Great team Work group!!

Group Toru:

Liam learnt the snake game to show halves.
Bree knows her halves now- 1/2, 3/6
Emily loved to use colour to show her fractions
Daina 3/6 and 2/4 is also a half

Special Interest blog post

Please have a go at answering your questions and constructing a model. I would love to see your floor plans!

Group Tahi:

Please comment with your answers..

Equivalent fractions

We are learning about fractions that have different numbers although are the exact same size.

Hollie's learning today

Hollie learnt
4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 +4 = 24
6 groups of 4 is 24
6 x 4 = 24
24 divided by 6 = 4

Group Rima- fraction battle

Key Learning:
XZavier:  When fractions are very close, you can convert them into decimals.
I know 3/4 = 0.75 and 11/13 = 0.84.  So 11/13 is bigger than 3/4.

Mikayla: Using rectangles (chocolate) is easier to cut into equal pieces, especially if the pieces are not equal.

Domique and Nessa: I learnt about the greater and less sign

Elise:  I learnt that 2/4 is half and is smaller than 4/6

Xavier: When drawing a rectangle being split into different pieces you need to put in one less line than the total pieces of the denominator.

Group Rua and Toru's game of the week

Rules for build me up
This game is to try and make 15 at the top of your pyramid.

  1. Draw a pyramid like this.

   2. Write 15 in the top circle.

3. Write 4 single digit numbers in the 4 bottom circles (1 - 9).

4. Add the two numbers beside each other and write the answer in the circle above.

5. Keep adding the numbers beside each together.

6. If it was right, it will add up to 15.

Ashton's learning today

Today we are looking at patterns:
The ladybirds are in groups of 4.
We know there are 4 groups of 4
4 x 4 = 16

We can use our doubles:
4 + 4 = 8
8 + 8 = 16

Welcome to Term 3

This week we will be using the cards to play

Special Interest: Countdown Challenge Game

Have a go at making your own countdown challenge cards and play with classmates or family at home!

Enjoy!!

Here is a chance to make a version of the classic Countdown Game.

Choose 6 cards.
Two 2 digit numbers ie. 25, 50, 75,
Four 1 digit cards ie numbers - 1 to 10 - its ok to have double ups.
Make a random three digit target ie 285.

The challenge is to use the numbers available and the four standard operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to hit the target. (if you can)

Each card can only be used once. It may not be necessary to use all the cards.

You may like to take on the challenge on your own or choose to play it as a game in which the first to reach the target gets a point. First to 10 points wins.

An alternative game could set a time limit and require the players to get as close to the target as possible. Each player could start with 100 points and then points could be deducted according to how far from the target each player has reached - e.g. 6 away from the target would mean that 6 points were deducted. After a set number of rounds, the player with the highest score wins.

Group toru: great effort group

This group has worked hard all term, they have all received certificates to show their efforts!
I'm very proud of you!!

Special interest: intake 2- Fraction snake..

This is the best puzzle to allow students to see fractions in a different way.
Each student has a snake 10 segments long (later increase the segments) or they can make their own.
They chose three colours and colour in a segment randomly.

They must make two cuts ensuring each part shows half of a colour.
 Each colour must be represented.

Well done Dayna and Olivia who collaborated together to create their snake.

Can you see how each colour is represented as half??

Have a go yourselves- don't forget to post a comment.

Special interest : Intake Two - Playing Nim

Playing Nim

• Got It is an adding game for two players. It is a version of a well-known game called Nim.

• Start with the Got It target '23'

• The first player chooses a whole number from 1 to 4.

• Players take turns to add a whole number from 1 to 4 to the running total.

• The player who hits the target of 23 wins the game.

• Play the game several times.

Can you find a winning strategy?

Can you always win?

Does your strategy depend on whether or not

you go first?

You can only make two cuts.

Group Rua: Game of the week

Modifying the multiplication battle to make only groups of 10 today.  Using the greater and less than sign. Well done Team!

10 x --- = ?

4 groups of 10 is 40
4 x 10 = 40

10 groups of 10 is 100
10 x 10 = 100

Antony shared that if its the same number you use the equal sign or ' = ' symbol.

We are practicing using our greater and less than signs as well.
